Oceans and Human Health

It’s estimated that 90% of future population growth will occur in tropical and subtropical regions. With greater use of marine resources, there is a growing concern over the impact of the oceans on human health via water and vector-borne infectious diseases. These issues translate into billions of dollars in health costs and millions of cases of acute and chronic disease worldwide. The track in Oceans and Human Health will prepare students to effectively assess these impacts and develop management tactics for future remediation. This degree is multidisciplinary, with courses in marine biology, public health, epidemiology, marine policy, and environmental engineering. Students will work closely with a consortium of scientists that comprise the University of Miami’s “Oceans and Human Health” group, including individuals from the Rosenstiel School, the Miller School of Medicine, and the College of Engineering.
